The Hartpury International 3*L was a real treat with the most special little horse that tried his very hardest in all three phases. CHF Captain Jacob (Arlo), owned by Jane Blakesly Grimes may only be a 7-year-old, but he learnt so much in the best company and loved the whole experience. He ticked off multiple firsts and I couldn't be more proud of his incredible progress and potential.

Tackling new challenges in the dressage

For Arlo, the week was full of new experiences, starting with his first time competing in an indoor arena with judges seated in chairs, rather than cars. Add to that a venue decked out with all the banners possible – certainly a big step in his education! He handled it beautifully, producing a lovely test, though the score was a bit disappointing. I’m excited to see how much more he will achieve as he matures in his education.

A bold and brave cross country

Next came the cross country, which featured a BIG, bold track full of technical questions and decorative flowers, not to mention jumping into Hartpury House garden! Arlo put in a wonderful clear round, only adding time penalties. He was so genuine and brave and full of trust in me with everything I asked of him. He certainly did not mind the late evening time slot.

Show jumping in front of a crowd

When it came to show jumping, there was plenty of atmosphere and larger crowds than he had ever experienced before. Despite this, he held his composure, delivering a lovely round despite a couple of poles down. His ability to keep his cool and jump in such a vibrant setting further highlighted how much he is learning and how far he has come.

Looking ahead

The whole experience at Hartpury was amazing in furthering his education, really showing just how special he is. I am beyond proud and can’t wait for what is to come. In my eyes he won gold! Thank you Arlo, Thank you Jane, and Thank you to so many people for all their help and support over the last month, in-fact the entire season! To everyone who is part of making the wheels go round on a daily basis, thank you.

Finally, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Hartpury and all the volunteers who made this week so memorable. It was truly an international event to remember, and I am incredibly proud to have been part of it.

Here’s to many more exciting days ahead with Arlo! This is only the beginning, and I can't wait to see where his talent and heart will take us next.
